One of my favorite things to do in the kitchen is take something basic and easy, like box brownie mix, and turning it into something special, like this yummy Halloween themed dessert. If you’re also a fan of box brownie recipes, these Halloween Brownies are for you!
Halloween Brownies
As we know, when it comes to Halloween themed desserts, I like cute and colorful more than anything else. And when it comes to desserts in general, easy is my preference.
I combined those two things to make these fun Halloween Brownies, made with….brownie mix. Yes. That’s right. I used a box brownie recipe to make these Halloween Brownies!
People are flabbergasted when they find out that I don’t always make everything from scratch.
Truth be told, I have a stash of brownie and cake mixes in my garage. They’re something I always stock up on during any 10 for $10 sales at the supermarket.
Brownies from a Box
Just because you make something from a box doesn’t mean that you can’t put your own spin on it to make it unique. My Halloween Brownies used a box of brownie mix with leftover cookie icing and sprinkles from my Halloween Chocolate Sugar Cookies.
And a couple secret ingredients so they taste AH-mazing!
Together, they made a beautiful dessert platter than gave variation for those who prefer one over the other and both were baked and done during just one nap time, which is how I measure all of my time these days, in naps.
And these fabulous Sprinkles are a custom blend straight from Sweets & Treats Shop! They have fun and festive blends for every occasions and holiday.
Why You’ll Love These Halloween Brownies
Rich brownies topped with an icing drizzle and festive sprinkles for fun Halloween treats – what’s not to love!
- Spooky treat – These brownies can be decorated however you’d like as the best way to celebrate the Halloween season.
- So much fun – This is one of my favorite dessert recipes to make with the kids, because they love to add the icing and sprinkles!
- Easy to make – With pantry ingredients and a boxed brownie mix, these halloween brownies couldn’t be easier to make.
Ingredients
The ingredients needed to make these homemade Halloween brownies can easily be found at your local grocery store.
- Box brownie mix – You will want to prepare the fudgy brownies according to the instructions on the box. Make sure you have all of the ingredients listed, usually vegetable oil, eggs and water.
- Vanilla extract – To make the boxed brownie mix taste more homemade, I like to add a little bit of vanilla. It adds warmth and flavor.
- Instant espresso – These delicious brownies get taken up a notch with a little espresso powder. It makes for a richer, bolder flavor.
- Mini chocolate chips – If you’re a chocolate lover like me, you’ll want to fold some chocolate chips into the batter.
- Cookie icing – Really get into the Halloween spirit with fun colors like black, orange, green and purple.
- Favorite sprinkles – Make these spooky Halloween brownies even more fun by adding some fun halloween sprinkles.
How to Make Halloween Brownies
You are going to love how easy it is to make the best Halloween brownies.
- Make brownie batter. Prepare brownie batter according to box directions, but add vanilla and instant espresso powder. Fold in mini chocolate chips.
- Bake. Bake according to package directions.
- Drizzle with icing. When brownies are cooled, drizzle with slightly warm cookie icing.
- Top with sprinkles. While tacky, sprinkle top of the brownies with favorite sprinkles and allow to set before cutting.
Variations
There are plenty of ways you can make these chewy brownies your own.
- Toppings – Instead of sprinkles, you can top these brownies with just about anything you’d like to. Candy eyes, candy corn or any leftover Halloween candy would all be great ideas.
- Add ins – You can also add several things to the store-bought brownie mix to take it up a notch. White chocolate chips, or even a swirl of peanut butter or cream cheese would be perfect.
- Fun holiday shapes – You could use cookie cutters to cut the brownies into fun shapes like ghosts or pumpkins.
- Decorations – Use melted chocolate to pipe fun things like little monsters or spider webs. You could even make these into mummy brownies with drizzled white chocolate and candy candy eyeballs.
Brownie Box Mix Hacks
These brownies use my super strong homemade vanilla extract with instant espresso powder and mini chocolate chips to elevate them.
Espresso powder might seem like an odd ingredient, but it is actually one of the best ways to take anything chocolate and amplify the flavor. If you are concerned with caffeine, use a caffeine free espresso powder. Or omit it, it won’t make or break the recipe.
Mini chocolate chips melt and make little gooey pockets of amazingness. Full size are another option, but minis tend to spread out more evenly.
- Add 2 teaspoons flavored extract.
- Add 1 cup chopped nuts.
- Add 1 cup chocolate, butterscotch or toffee chips.
- Top with fudge or easy caramel sauce.
- Sprinkle with fleur de sel, making them sweet and salty!
I have to admit that because they’re so easy, these brownies have become one of my favorite Halloween desserts this year. Even better, because they’re so festive and delicious, everyone thinks I made them from scratch.
Storage and Freezing
Storage: You can store this favorite brownie recipe in an airtight container at room temperature. They would also be great in the refrigerator.
Freezing: They will also freeze well. You can wrap them individually in parchment paper and then put into a freezer bag. They’ll last for about three months.
